The Allied Health Provider Colorectal Symposium

Saturday, April 30, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm

CME Credit Hours: 4

Advanced practice providers (APPs) and other allied health members have become a crucial part of health care teams and are providing front-line care to colorectal surgery patients. This symposium will allow APPs, physicians and other allied health members to further their knowledge on timely topics, as colorectal surgical teams become more diverse and utilize APPs in increasingly complex roles. Discussions will focus on increasing knowledge of complex patient care, professional development, and optimizing APP practice. A panel will be conducted to discuss the future of colon and rectal surgery APP education and what a future APP fellowship might include. APPs will have an opportunity to initiate a national network of colon and rectal surgery APPs with a common mission, goals, and connection to ASCRS.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
  1. Describe the work up and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction and recognize the role of the pelvic floor physical therapist.
  2. Describe various treatments for complex wound care, peristomal skin complications, and perianal dermatitis.
  3. Recognize psychological co-morbidities in colorectal patients and when to refer to a behavioral therapist.
  4. Manage benign anorectal complaints in the office and operating room
  5. Describe operative training for APPs and how APPs function in the OR and peri-operative setting.
  6. Identify the knowledge of APP professionalism relating to ethics, public speaking, and society membership.
  7. Identify the key components of APP orientation and transition to practice
