About

As colorectal surgeons practicing in a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, we find ourselves in a period of profound transformation. To prepare our members for what lies ahead, we must provide the resources and training necessary for surgeons to succeed and provide exceptional patient care. To that end, we are launching this effort to transform ASCRS U, the Society’s online education platform, into a true virtual University to allow members to identify their education path based on the stage of their career, their interests, and the skills needed to be successful.

Our Vision for ASCRS U

We envision the evolution of ASCRS U to incorporate aspects of a fully functioning University, complete with specific Colleges or areas of focus for sectors of education, surgical sciences, leadership, business, and innovation. Relevant educational content and resources will exist within each focus area. For example, ASCRS U as it is known today would continue to exist under the “College of Education”, allowing other areas of focus to house offerings that may already exist, such as the Surgical Leadership Institute within the College of Leadership, and expand within their respective focus area. Below is a visual sample of a potential future ASCRS U model.

This enhanced platform will provide the relevant resources that help our members navigate their unique journeys as surgeons and leaders by creating a more personalized membership experience tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual. New tools and offerings will be developed to support the evolving needs and preferences of our members. This model will allow the Society to consolidate current efforts to identify gaps in offerings and develop content necessary to provide a robust menu of content.Testimonial_Gaertner.jpg

Supporting Our Vision

Ongoing support and the ability to address the educational and professional needs of our members is critical. While the annual operational budget of ASCRS covers essential financial requirements, the Educational Fund and ASCRS revenue fall short of meeting the growing demands for support and expansion. Funding for this special initiative will directly impact the quality and accessibility of the education the Society provides. The specific priorities funded through this Campaign are dependent on the amount of funds received and will be determined by the ASCRS Executive Council. ASCRS is committed to complete transparency for the allocation of funds and will make this information available to all donors and members on an annual basis. Investing in the 125th Anniversary will not only support the future of the ASCRS U platform, but also, and more importantly, will empower thousands of colorectal surgeons to improve their skills, stay updated on the latest advancements, and ultimately provide better care to patients around the globe.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the 125th Anniversary Campaign?
The 125th Anniversary Campaign is a special initiative to commemorate our rich legacy and position our Society to continue leading, inspiring, and empowering today’s colorectal surgeons and those who will follow in their path.
  • What is the goal of the campaign?
We recognize that to provide exceptional patient care in today’s evolving healthcare landscape, ASCRS must continue to provide the resources and training necessary for surgeons to succeed. To ensure that is possible, the Campaign will allow the Society to provide quality education, offer leadership development resources, and invest in innovative research projects to support colorectal surgeons at every stage of their careers. All aspects of this education will be offered through the Society’s online platform, ASCRS U.Testimonial_King-Mullins.jpg
  • Why is ASCRS raising money when it has such strong reserves?
It is a common misconception that ASCRS is just “sitting” on its reserves. Maintaining the Education Fund ensures the long-term sustainability of the Society and enables us to provide access to programs at a reduced cost – often well below the median compared to other medical societies. This includes items such as dues, access to ASCRS U, and the Annual Scientific Meeting. While the annual operational budget of ASCRS covers essential financial requirements, the Educational Fund and ASCRS revenue fall short of meeting the growing demands for support and expansion. Supporting the 125th Anniversary Campaign will enable us to generate funds that can be used to initiate new programs outside the scope of normal operations to amplify member value more quickly. See this infographic for more information.
  • Who are you asking to get involved?
Anyone with an interest in the future of colorectal surgery is invited to participate in the Campaign.
  • How much are you asking us to give?
While there is no minimum amount to get involved, we are asking that you take the time to reflect on what our Society and specialty mean to you and consider a gift that is personally meaningful. There are several giving levels to choose from and support can be pledged over a five-year period, which may help in making a truly aspirational gift. Please know that all commitments will be accepted and recognized appropriately. Every commitment, regardless of the amount, is appreciated.
  • What payment options are available to donors?
ASCRS is seeking pledges that can be paid over a five-year period to support the Anniversary initiative. Donors will have the discretion to establish a payment fulfillment schedule that will work best for them. This approach ensures the Society has the resources necessary to launch and support new career development programs.
  • How will Campaign donors be recognized?
Supporters will be recognized through a comprehensive recognition program, acknowledging individuals and organizations that invest in the effort. There will be several tiers of recognition to distinguish donors, beginning from the time that they make their commitment and continue through 2028.Testimonial_Colvin.jpg
