ASCRS Grant Deadlines Approaching

The ASCRS Research Foundation announces four 2015 Research Foundation grant opportunities now available!

Limited Project Grants offer investigators an opportunity to pursue research interest for a one-year project, with funding of up to $50,000.

The International Fellowship Grant provides research support to residents and clinical investigators in the United States or Canada to travel outside North America or allows investigators from outside the United States and Canada to travel to the United States to perform research. The International Fellowship Grant funds up to $50,000 for one year.

General Surgery Resident Research Initiation Grants are designed to attract General Surgery Residents or recent graduates of such programs into the field of Colon and Rectal Surgery by providing opportunities to engage in clinical or laboratory-based research focused on diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. The Research Foundation funds up to five grants annually, each totaling $20,000.

Medical Student Research Initiation Grants are designed to provide opportunities for Medical Students to participate in clinical or laboratory-based research focused on diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. This three or four month grant provides up to $4,000 for a summer project.

ASCRS Historical Scrapbook

View the historical ASCRS Scrapbook and visit past eras of the specialty. The scrapbook begins with news articles dating back to 1898. Enjoy the rich history of the Society and read about the early leadership and their many accomplishments.

ASCRS Invites Applications for new Editor-in-Chief

The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons invites applications for the position of Editor in Chief of Diseases of the Colon and Rectum for a 5 year term (renewable for a second 5 year term).

It is the responsibility of the Editor in Chief to:

  • Ensure that the journal address cutting-edge issues in diseases of the colon, rectum and anus
  • Provide overall leadership and direction for the content of the journal
  • Supervise the solicitation, receipt and review of manuscripts
  • Respond to authors in a timely manner
  • Oversee correspondence with authors and reviewers
  • Oversee editing and production of the journal in collaboration with the publisher
  • Ensure that 12 monthly issues are produced in a timely fashion
  • Develop new sections in the journal and methods of communication to ensure that the journal maintains its standing as the premier colorectal surgery journal

Applicants must be Fellows of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Qualifications should include a record of significant scholarly achievement; familiarity with the literature in the field, clinical research design, and basic concepts of statistics and ethics of research; administrative and editorial skills; capacity for detail work; understanding of the international community of scholars and practitioners; and strong interpersonal skills.

The new Editor-in-Chief will be appointed in early 2016 and work with the current Editorial Board until he/she assumes full responsibility on January 1, 2017.

The successful candidate will receive a stipend for personal support and reimbursement of travel expenses to the Surgical Journal Editors Group meeting at the American College of Surgeons.

Interested applicants should send a letter outlining their qualifications, their views on the current status of the journal, and the challenges and opportunities that face the next editor. As well, they should include: recent curriculum vitae, a statement of support from the individual’s institution; and names of two references: the chair of the applicant’s department and one other who is aware of the applicant’s editorial experience and skills. Selected applicants will be interviewed in mid 2015 at a date and location to be set and a decision will be made by the Council of the ASCRS soon after.
