CREST Core Subject: Trauma

CREST Core modules cover Core Subjects in Colorectal Surgery. This module describes the management of colon trauma, rectal trauma and management of rectally inserted foreign bodies.

Upon completion of this module, learners should be able to:

  1. Recall the historical context and evolution of management of colorectal trauma.
  2. List the differences between colon trauma and rectal trauma.
  3. List the differences between civilian and military traumatic injuries.
  4. Know how to manage various colorectal trauma scenarios.
  5. Describe the epidemiology and social aspects of rectal foreign bodies.
  6. Explain the management strategies for removal of rectal foreign bodies.

As a Core Subject, it is eligible for 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

CREST Weekly - Current Trials of Adjuvant Therapy for Colorectal Cancer

This CREST module reviews the current clinical trials for adjuvant therapy in patients with colon and rectal cancer.

  • Review current clinical trials for adjuvant therapy for colon cancer.
  • Review current clinical trials for adjuvant therapy for rectal cancer patients.

CREST Weekly: How to Manage Rectal GIST

In this CREST module, "How to Manage Rectal GIST" get a review of GIST tumors,

arise from interstitial cells of Cajal and stain for CD117 antigen, a marker for KIT tyrosine kinase oncoprotein. Imatinib targets this oncoprotein and is the drug of choice for the treatment of GIST. Rectal GIST represents 5% of all GIST and the first line of treatment is surgical excision. Frequently these tumors also require neoadjuvant therapy in order to obtain negative margins and downsize the tumor, or postoperatively in the adjuvant setting.

Upon completion of this module, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the main features of GIST tumors.
  • Evaluate surgical indications for rectal GIST.
  • Describe types of surgery for rectal GIST based on location and size.
  • Evaluate the role of neoadjuvant vs. adjuvant therapy in the management of rectal GIST.

CREST Weekly: Lynch Syndrome

This CREST weekly module will provide the learner a high level overview of Lynch Syndrome. The module will cover epidemiology, genetics, diagnosis, treatment, surveillance, familial testing, and lynch and lynch-like syndromes. At completion the learner should have a good understanding of how to screen, survey, and effectively treat patients with Lynch Syndrome.

As a Core Subject, it is eligible for 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
