Why I am a member of ASCRS:

ASCRS is the heart and soul of our specialty. I take great pride in being a colon and rectal surgeon, and ASCRS provides me with the opportunity to connect meaningfully with surgeons from across the country who share common interests and goals. ASCRS also provides our patients with high-quality educational resources, which highlight the benefits of colon and rectal surgery specialty training.

What do you want your patients to know about you?

Coming to see a colon and rectal surgeon may make you feel embarrassed or uncomfortable. Almost no one is thrilled to have to go see a colon and rectal surgeon! My job is not only to get you through surgery safely and with a great outcome, but also to provide comfort and reassurance. I may ask personal or private questions, or ask for a lot of details about your bowel function, because I care. I want to treat your surgical condition effectively while also maintaining or improving your function and quality of life. I view the patient-physician relationship as a team—we make decisions together.

This free webcast on the new ASCRS Enhanced Recovery Program (ERP) Guidelines addresses physiologic principles behind preoperative carbohydrate loading, the medications used in multimodal analgesia (MMA), and strategies for prophylaxis of post-operative ileus (POI). Instruction is given on how to implement ERP at learner’s institutions and on the benefits for all elective colorectal surgery patients, including those undergoing complex operations to reduce sub-optimal post-operative patient outcomes.

Primary target audience
All providers (colorectal surgeons, internists, nursing, APPs, anesthesia providers) caring for patients with colorectal diseases. As this involves every aspect of care from preoperative evaluation through to perioperative care and surgery to post-operative recovery, this is an ideal topic for a multi-disciplinary approach.

Learning objectives

1. Describe the physiologic principles behind preoperative carbohydrate loading.
2. Discuss the medications used in multimodal analgesia (MMA).
3. Apply strategies for prophylaxis of post-operative ileus (POI).
4. Recognize that an ERP can benefit essentially all elective colorectal surgery patients, including those undergoing complex operations.
5. Explain how to implement an ERP at their own institution.
6. Discuss the value equation as it applies to an ERP.

Becoming the first surgeon to receive a Sherman Prize for Excellence in Crohn's and Colitis, Dr. Amy Lightner was awarded with the 2018 Sherman Emerging Leader Prize at the AIBD conference on December 13, 2018, for her achievements pushing the boundaries of minimally invasive surgery and exploring regenerative cellular and acellular therapies to help manage some of the most difficult complications of Crohn's disease. Dr. Lightner is an assistant professor of surgery at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and the associate chair of the ASCRS IBD Committee. Learn more about her work.

Every year, two $100,000 Sherman Prizes are awarded to individuals with extraordinary track records of achievement transforming IBD care and inspiring tomorrow’s innovators. A $25,000 Sherman Emerging Leader Prize is awarded to an individual making impressive contributions early in his or her career and demonstrating strong potential to make an even greater impact in the future. Help more surgeons get recognized by nominating a peer or colleague for the 2019 prize.

Dr. Pedro Juan Soberanis Aguilar,70, of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico and Columbus, Ohio passed away peacefully on December 8, 2018, surrounded by family. He battled lung and brain cancer. He is survived by his wife, Aireen, daughter Angelia and son Alain.

Dr. Aguilar practiced as a Colon and Rectal Surgeon for 37 years. He served as program director of the Colon and Rectal Surgery Residency program at Grant Medical Center from 1991-2015 and associate director from 2015 -2017. As program director, he dedicated his time, knowledge and support to the training and mentoring of over 70 colon and rectal fellows.

In addition to his work at Grant Medical Center, Dr. Aguilar participated in medical mission trips to the Philippines, and Mexico. He also served as the health advisor fo the Latino Empowerment Outreach Network.

He also enjoyed tailgating at OSU football games, cheering for the Columbus Clippers, Crew. Bluejackets. As well as listening to mariachi bands and jazz concerts.
